When an individual is born in the U.S. or areas possessed by the U.S., they are automatically U.S. citizens. This is also true of those who were born to parents who were U.S. citizens. However, what about those who do not fall into either of these categories yet want to become citizens? Through naturalization, those who are not eligible for citizenship by birth could use this means to become citizens. Established by the Immigration and Nationality Act, there are certain conditions that must be met in order to obtain citizenship. First is that you were a permanent resident for at least five years. The second way is if you were a permanent resident for at least three years as well as married to a U.S. citizen. Members of the military who are not citizens can also apply for citizenship. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to talk to an immigration attorney. In order to have the best possible chances of success, you need a professional on your side.
