In the U.S. Senate, a new amendment has been added to the immigration reform bill to help build its passage through that chamber. The amendment was revealed yesterday on the Senate floor after being drafted by Republican Senators along with the original bill authors. The new amendment which strengthens border patrol at a likely hefty cost is designed to satisfy those who opposed the earlier version of the bill without it. Those who support the bill are hoping to obtain 70 votes in its favor in the Senate which they believe will put pressure on the House to do the same.
The amendment calls for doubling the number of patrol agents along the U.S.-Mexico border, amping this number from 185,000 up to 400,000. It also calls for the building of another 700 miles of fencing on the border and would implement a program making employers verify the status of workers. The amendment would also put in a mandatory tracking system of entries and exits at international airports and seaports. The existing bill previously set aside $6.5 billion for border security. This increased border security amendment plan would raise that figure substantially although no estimates have been determined as yet.
The immigration reform bill would create a ten-year route for immigrants with provisional status to obtain a green card and lawful permanent status.
