Heated Debate over Allowing Driving Licenses for Illegal Immigrants Continues

Texas House Bill 3206 authored by State Representative Roberto Alonzo (D-Dallas) and assisted by a Republican State Representative, Byron Cook, would change current policy regarding issuance of driver's licenses to immigrants. The current state law requires that anyone applying for a driver's license or permit must provide proof of status as either a U.S. citizen or a legal immigrant. The exception is for those who qualify under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program because they were brought to the U.S. when they were children. Houston residents recently voiced their approval and disapproval for the bill which continues to be a point of contention in state and federal immigration issues. Those against the bill state that those here illegally should not be rewarded with a driver's license when there are legal citizens who are denied a license or have had theirs revoked because they couldn't pay their traffic tickets. Proponents of allowing illegal or undocumented immigrants to obtain a license feel that it actually provides a way to keep track of immigrants and require that they follow certain laws. Many argue that undocumented immigrants drive anyway whether they have a license or not so there might as well be a law that grants them the ability to apply for a license. Others feel that there should be certain requirements even if the driver's license applicant is here illegally such as being able to speak and understand English as well as pass a driving test. No doubt there will be continued debate on the topic of immigration laws and reform as state and federal representatives work to improve the system. Speak with an immigration attorney as soon as possible if you have questions about an immigration matter.
