Department of Homeland Security Releases Year End Fact Sheet

Today, the Department of Homeland Security released a fact sheet entitled "End of Year Accomplishments". On the list, it is reported that:
- The Customs Border Patrol (CBP) has increased its workforce since last year from 46,473 to 51,533. This year, it added officers, agents, and agriculture specialists.
- Customs Border Patrol doubled the size of Border Protection from 9,000 to over 18,000 as of November 18, 2008, and it continues to grow.
- Custom Border Patrol has built over 520 miles of vehicle and pedestrian fencing along the United State's Southern Border. In 2008, CBP added 93 miles of fencing, with plans to build approximately 670 miles of fencing in the near future.
- Since January 2008, United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (CE) returned over 323,000 illegal immigrants from the U.S. to their home countries. This is a 20% increase from 2007.
- Customs Enforcement also increased consequences against employers who hired illegal immigrants and violated state laws. Employers who hired illegal immigrants were subjected to fines and judgments that totaled millions of dollars. Additionally, repeat offenders were subjected to jail sentences.
