Boston, Massachusetts - officials from the state are reporting that a man from the Dominican Republic died while he was in federal custody. The many was being held for immigration violations when he suddenly went into cardiac arrest.
Recently, the state's medical examiner's office ruled that the man, 49 year old Pedro Tavarez, died of natural causes while being detained.
Tavarez had been held in the Suffolk County House of Correction when he unexpectedly fell ill on October 19th. After telling officers that he felt sick, he was taken to Boston hospital where he later died after going into cardiac arrest.
At this time, Tavarez's relatives are saying that they told federal agents to look further into his death. While he was known to have diabetes and high blood pressure, he did not have any diagnosed heart conditions. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's federal Office of Professional Responsibility is supposedly looking further into the death.
Since 2003, 106 inmates have died while in immigration custody, including Pedro Tavarez.
