Nebraska Legislators try to Prevent Illegal Immigration

On February 24th, legislators will come together to discuss a new proposal that was created to curb future illegal
immigration.
This past week, the Judiciary Committee met to combine three differing immigration bills into one unified bill. The new bill would require state and local agencies to check and verify the legal status of any person that is trying to collect public benefits. Additionally, the bill would require public employers and contractors to check the peoples' legal statuses once they are hired as employees. The bill also includes a proposal that would require people to prove their legal status when they are trying to obtain state issued tax breaks.
Senator Russ Karpisek said that, "The most important aspects that I feel are that any state monies that are being paid out, if it's any kind of benefits, are going to be made sure that it's going to a legal citizen of the state, or of the country."
At this time, the bill does not address conditions or terms of eliminating in-state tuition for children of illegal immigrants, something legislators have been discussing. Karpisek said that it would be discussed by legislators at a later time as it is a differing issue.
